It all began quite simply: In 1900, a young man had to replenish his student bank account in order to complete his final year at Law School. So he sold lamps in a small town in Oklahoma, now called Kingfisher. He discovered this lamp for the first time in a shop window of a shop in Alabama. He could see very badly, so his classmates often had to read texts to him. However, this pure white light in the shop window stopped W. C. Coleman on his way. He went into the shop to take a closer look at the lamp and noticed that he could even read the small print of a medicine bottle. The lamps had glow hoods instead of wicks, and they were powered by pressurized gasoline instead of oil. Their light was pure and white. When young Coleman heard that the company was even looking for employees to sell it, he invested all his savings and bought up all the stock. He wanted to sell these lamps in one go to merchants who wanted their shops open even in the evening. It turned out, however, that he could not sell the lamps. The merchants in Kingfisher had just bought less bright lamps from another dealer. But Coleman did not give up and had the decisive idea. He established a 'light service' with which he sold fuel according to the motto 'no more light - no money for fuel'. The customers were happy to follow this business idea. The light service in Kingfisher set the tone. The service expanded to other western cities such as San Diego and Las Vegas. In 1902, Coleman settled in Wichita, Kansas, because he thought this was the center of his activities. Somehow wrong and yet right, because it turned out that his sales territory would one day be the whole world.
After World War I people had money again and wanted to have fun. Cars were no longer a rarity and became affordable for many families. With the increased mobility grew also the desire to travel and to explore foreign angles. The leisure business was booming, and Coleman jumped on this train. Autocamping was in. Travellers tied their luggage to the roof and simply drove off. The roads got better, but there were not enough accommodations. Holidaymakers therefore pitched their tents on the edge of the road.
The folding stove Camp Stove, which was developed in 1923, quickly found favour with autocampers. Dealers called this stove 'miracle stove and bestseller'. He found his way to the verandas and hunting lodges, holiday homes and caravans. The lamp found new uses and was a popular travel companion with the cooker.
The company's ability to detect and pick up on trends was characteristic, and it catapulted the company into the second half of the last century. The signs were good, America was moving outside. And Coleman® moved with it.
The lamp and Camp Stove, both leaders in their category, formed the basis for a comprehensive range of leisure products, which was expanded in 1954 with the galvanised Steel Cooler. Three years later, Coleman revolutionized the production of coolers by developing a process to produce plastic coolers and insulated bottles.
The focus was clearly on the development and marketing of products that would make people's lives outside more pleasant. So the company made some strategic acquisitions and very quickly integrated tents and sleeping bags into the range.
